Thomas Stanesby (Junior) lebte von 1692 bis 1754 in London. Nach seiner Lehrzeit und langen Jahren als Mitarbeiter bei und mit seinem Vater übernahm er 1734 dessen Werkstatt. Beide waren berühmt für die vorzügliche Qualität ihrer Instrumente. |

Thomas Stanesby (junior) lived from 1692 to 1754 in London. After a long period of apprenticeship and cooperation in his fathers workshop he took over the workshop in 1734. Both father and son were noted for the excellent qualitiy of their instruments. |

Das Original dieses Instruments befindet sich in der Bate Collection, Oxford. Es ist vierteilig, aus Buchsbaum, mit Ringen und Kappe aus Elfenbein und einer ziselierten Silberklappe. Da Thomas Stanesby Junior auch schon in der Werkstatt des Vaters seine Traversflöten mit seinem eigenen Namen signierte, könnte das Instrument durchaus vor 1734 gebaut worden sein. Dafür spricht, dass alle Zapfen nach unten zeigen. Das Mundloch ist übermässig vergrössert und damit nicht mehr im Originalzustand. Der originale Stimmton dürfte bei a1 = 410 Hz gelegen haben. |

The original of this instrument is located in the Bate Collection, Oxford. It has four parts of boxwood, with rings and cap of ivory and a finely engraved silver key. As Thomas Stanesby signed his traverse flutes made in his fathers workshop with his own name the flute could well be built before 1734. To this would allude the fact that all tenons show downwards. Unfortunately the mouthole is unduly enlarged and not anymore in its original state. The original keynote was about 410 Hz. |

Sein Grundton liegt eine grosse Terz unter den normalen D-Flöten und ist damit ein halber Ton tiefer als eine flute d'amour. Und wegen der weiten Mensurierung besitzt es einen grossen und dunklen Klang. Es bildet eine eigene Famile. |

Its keynote lies a great third below the normal d flute and so is a half note below a flute d'amour. And due to the wide bore it has a big and dark sound. It forms an own family of instruments. |

Ich baue das Instrument aus Buchsbaum mit einer Messing- oder Silberklappe und Garnituren aus Kunstelfenbein in a1 = 415 Hz. Mit einem Satz von Wechselringen können alle Zwischenstimmungen bis hinunter nach a1 = 392 Hz erreicht werden. Da das Mundloch leider nicht mehr im Originalzustand ist, habe ich als Vorlage dasjenige des 2. bekannten Exemplar in Modena verwendet. - Die Flöte spielt über den vollen Tonumfang. |

I build this instrument in boxwood with a brass or silver key with the trimmings in artificial ivory an a1 = 415 Hz. With a set of exchangeable rings all intermediate tunings can be reached down to a1 = 392 Hz. As the mouthole is not in its original state I used as a model the 2nd known specimen of Modena. - The flute plays over the full range. |
